The Cure
What is the Cure, anyway?
The Cure is a special type of brain surgery that removes the ability of a human being to feel strong emotion, especially love. However, the Cure is extremely dangerous for those under eighteen years of age. The DFA is working on creating a cure for children, but haven't developed one yet.
What emotions exactly does it eliminate?
The Cure eliminates any strong emotion. The most notable examples would be hate and love. It also tends to tone down individuality and increase desire to follow rules. Cured people like going with the flow and rarely get excited about anything. They almost never cry.
How does this affect relationships between family members?
Cured can like other people, and do feel some level of affection for their family, especially their children. However, open displays of affection, especially touching, are rare, and discouraged.
Sometimes the Cure would too well and the person is incapable of feeling pretty much anything, and become robot-like. This condition is serious, rare, and as of now, irreversible. Often people like this are thrown in the Crypts because they often become neglectful of themselves and their family. However, it seems to be a valued trait among the ranks of the DFA.

Is the Cure reversible?
No, although the Invalids would very much like it to be, so they are working hard to find a way to reverse it. They sometimes (meaning, whenever they can) capture Cured and hold the prisoner, trying to save them.
It is impossible for Cureds themselves to "fight" the procedure. Some cured can fake emotion rather well, but it is impossible for them to really feel strong emotion.

Are there any cured Invalids?
Sort of. Not cured people on whom the Cure actually worked. But sometimes the Cure doesn't work (about 20% of the time) and these people often become Invalids. If the DFA realizes the Cure didn't work, they'll have the procedure done again. Every time the procedure is repeated, it becomes more dangerous.
The Invalids are able to fake the mark that cured have on the back of their neck (it's a three pointed scar). So, some invalids appear cured, even though they aren't.
