Ryan was born in the wilds. Her parents had fled the city when Ryan's mother became pregnant unexpectedly and they had to flee because, of course, a child would be a dead giveaway that she was infected. So they ran away, and Ryan was born in the wilds.
They also raised her there. Many of the invalids born in the wilds are sent to the cities because the government is not familiar with their fingerprints and DNA (after someone flees after living in the city for a long time, their fingerprints and DNA and such are invalidated, and if those items are ever identified in the city the person with them can be arrested). But Ryan's parents wanted to raise her in the wilds, and so they did. She was well liked, very helpful around the site, and incredibly dedicated to the invalid cause.
But then the DFA showed up. It was one of their rare raids on the wilds, they happened to come to pass a bush and notice Ryan hiding inside it. They snatched her and took her to the city. Before she knew what was going on, she was one of five members of the DFA youth division. It was a nightmare, but real.
She tried (and is still trying) to persuade the others to rebel or escape or sabotage the DFA's property, but they haven't yet agreed. Ryan was shocked and angry to discover that three of her companions had resigned themselves to their new life, and one had become loyal to the DFA! She plans to escape very soon, with or without the others.
