Juliette pulled away from her boyfriend, wishing she didn't have to. But it was getting scarily close to two o'clock in the morning and if she stayed out much later, not only would her parents wait up her (that wouldn't be an issue- she knew how to get past them) they might send out a search party. And besides, she had thought she'd heard something. Raids weren't known for being quiet- usually they were deafening- but it was better safe than sorry. Maybe the raiders had wizened up and were sneaking (rather than stomping) around. "Go," she whispered. "I can hide behind this bush but you're too tall." This was true. The bush was easily big enough to hide Juliette, if she crouched, but her boyfriend, who was much taller than her, was far too big. He ran away reluctantly, kissing her one last time as he left.
Juliette crouched behind the bush, watching. She heard footsteps. Had the other person seen her? That wouldn't be an issue. It wouldn't be hard to justify being behind a bush. But if the other person had seen Juliette and her boyfriend, that would be disastrous. Especially if they knew who she was. Which was very likely. She and her family featured often on TV, and most anyone who was anyone- really, anyone who didn't live under a rock- would know who Juliette was.
And then she'd really be in trouble.
Just in case, Juliette dropped the small flower she was wearing in her hair and nearly down, acting as if she'd only been behind the bush in order to retrieve it. She bent down, reaching...
And behind her, someone said, "Hello?" |

give me time and give me space Skye walked quietly along the alley. Even though she was trying to be quiet, she could hear her steps ringing in the quiet alley. She was watching a couple kissing. It was all beautiful. The government was insane to forbid this beauty! And it was Skye's job to bring reason and beauty back to the masses.
The girl pulled away from her lover and whispered (too loudly, of course, since Skye heard it) for him to run. He kissed her one last time then obeyed. The girl disappeared behind a bush and in doing so have Skye a good look at her face. Skye instantly recognized it, of course. That was Juliette Doveney! Oh, this was priceless. The head of the DFA had a daughter who was infected! Skye just had to recruit Juliette to the cause!
She went around to the other side of the bush and asked from behind the girl, "Hello?" Her time implied the quail but she asked it anyway, "what are you doing here?" This was a test. If Juliette confessed her crimes, she was too naive to be useful. But if she didn't, Skye would have to find a way to recruit her. Having the DFA's leader's daughter on their side would be a crippling blow to the DFA. It was just what they needed. Juliette could be the feather (or, really, the brick, given her vast influence) that tipped the scales and led the invalids to victory.

Juliette stood up and studied the other girl. She was quite pretty, and looked exactly Juliette's height. Her hair was long and blonde and wavy, and she had big aqua eyes with light eyebrows and long lashes. Just from her looks she wouldn't have cast the girl as the kind of person who'd be out here this late, but here she was.
Juliette picked up the flower and stuck it back in her hair. "I was picking up this." She knew the girl had really been asking, "why are you out here so late?" But she had no intention of answering that question, even if she was asked directly. "What are you doing here? Do you know what time it is?"
Juliette was positive she'd been identified. She could see it in the girl's eyes. This girl looked too young to be DFA, and regulators usually declared their status immediately. But it was possible the girl had aged well or that she was a smart regulator (it would be a first, but it was possible). Juliette considered running away. That would certainly make her look guilty but it might keep her from being arrested. Whatever happened, she had to keep this girl from tipping off her father, because that would be disastrous. |
