The DFA
All DFA agents are three things: over 25, cured, and married. Their job is to make sure everyone over eighteen is cured, and that the minors don't get infected. Most DFA are extremely radical, pro-cure types that support their government to the end. That being said there are a few invalids in their ranks, pretending to be cured.
The DFA are often ruthless and violent, and show no mercy to infected. They are responsible for most of the raids around the city. Sometimes, usually as punishment for something or other, DFA agents will get stuck guarding the Crypts for a while.
As a general rule, if something is happening outside the fence, they ignore it. They do try very hard to keep citizens in, and would rather an escaping citizen die than become an invalid; they often shoot escapees through the fence. After an escape they really tighten security, electrifying the whole fence and posting more guards.
DFA agent is not a job handed out at evaluations. Agents join on a volunteer basis (although many that want to join get rejected- it's an exclusive group), and if they're accepted, they quit their jobs to be agents. It is a matter of pride to be DFA, and most agents trumpet their employment.
The leader of the Portland chapter of the DFA is Rufus Doveney, a radical, rich, and ruthless leader. He rewards his allies and punished his enemies. He is married with four children. The leadership of the DFA is usually passed on from parent to child, so some day one of his children will lead the DFA.
